Nothing adds to stress levels more than being housebound everyday with a new baby. Going outside the house with a baby even for a brisk walk and leisure stroll down to the shop is necessary to get fresh air for both mom and baby. Babies like to go outside and see around. It helps them to learn “new things” – they may be interested with birds, plants, cars, and any other things around.
When it’s time to venture out, you will need to be prepared. Below are some of the checklists :
In baby bag :
Always keep a baby bag packed with the essential baby needs. Your baby bag might contain :
- two or three disposable diapers and diaper sack
- baby wipes and a small bottle of baby lotion or moisturizers to avoid diaper rash
- change of clean clothes and a plastic bag for the soiled ones
- some healthy snacks
- sunscreen, insect repellent, adhesive plasters, and antiseptic as quick first aid kit
Baby Dress Choice
Choose clothes suitable for the time of year. A good rule of thumb is to see how many layers of clothing you are wearing as babies are just like us when it comes to body heat and temperature.
During hot weather, remove the clothing but make sure to protect the baby from direct sun exposure. Babies skin are very delicate and prone to heat rush and sunburn, so keep them out of the sun.
Give him/her lots of liquids, dress in lightweight, light coloured clothing, and use a 15 SPF sunscreen or higher for older babies (not recommended for babies under six months of age). Clothes made from cottons that breathe tend to be better for babies.
In cold weather, the heat from baby’s body tend to escape very quickly, so a warm hat such as beanies are necessary. Offer plenty of fluids and food prior to venturing out in the cold.
On the move
If you prefer to keep your hands free, you can pop your baby in a baby sling, or papoose, until the baby is about 6 months old. Most babies will find mother’s or father’s body movement and warmth soothing.
From around 4 months, you can carry baby in a backpack carrier. Made of strong material and with steep supports. backpacks can hold even quite heavy toddlers.
Every tiny babies must be properly strapped into a lie-back stroller. From about two months, put you baby in a harness in a pram or fully reclined stroller. Always make sure the brake is on correctly before you leave any pram or stroller.
In the car
it is important to plan ahead when buying a car seat for your baby. Make sure if its properly fitted to your car. Always secure baby in a properly fastened child restraint suitable for his age. Never let him sleep on the car seat. Never travel with baby on your lap, even to feed him. Never tie dummies, toys, or other items to baby’s clothing or to car restraints. In some countries it is illegal to travel in a car without using a safety restraint for your baby or child.
Always remember to NEVER leave your child unattended in a car. In warm weather cars heat up very fast and a baby can suffer potentially fatal heat stroke.
