Caring for Your Newborn Baby

Being a new parent is a gift that every woman and man can be thankful for.
The first time you hold your baby in your arms, the first time he opens his
mouth, and basically the first of everything, you would do just about anything to protect that new angel of yours. If you can, you give them the best of everything, and this includes the bed, the clothes, and the things you put on their skin.

Because the babies skin is so sensitive and fragile, we need to be careful
to choose what to put on them. Some chemicals can cause skin break out, and that is the last thing you would want to happen to your baby.

Baby health care is one of the many concerns of a new mother. New baby is a blessing and every mother would want to do everything and anything to keep her baby safe. In making the choices of what products to buy, mother’s priority should be newborn’s health. After all, the right health care for baby is the foundation of the child’s health care in future.

Each time a child is born, the world lights up with possibilities

In the last few weeks of your pregnancy, you also need to plan ahead,
preparing a nursery or space for your new baby with a cot or bassinet, change table, and other everyday nursery needs. You should also have fitted your car with proper baby restraints to prepare for the day you leave the hospital.

Following are a few must-have baby basics :

1. Baby Clothes / Onesies.
Many baby onesies come in cute colors and prints. They’re amazing and very versatile as well in case you need to quickly bring your child with you for an emergency errand. You can just put it underneath coats and bottoms, and good to go.

2. First Aid Kit. This is probably the most important of baby basics. The
first aid kit should contain some basic medicines, a good thermometer, emergency numbers, and some first aid cards containing tips for what to do in case of an emergency.

3. Diapers, plenty of them. Make sure to stock up. Some babies may be
allergic to certain kinds of diapers. Calm down and do not panic. Instead,
switch to hypoallergenic baby diapers or organic cloth diapers.

4. Baby slings.
These are especially helpful when you like to go out with your baby. They are good for discreet breastfeeding as well. Nowadays the baby slings come with so many styles and comforts for both baby and mom.

5. Baby bassinet, cradle, or cot. Make sure that it has side guards around so that your baby is kept safe even when he moves throughout the night.

6. Car seat and stroller. Many companies such as Baby Trend and Evenflo sell car seats that can also be converted into strollers. Whatever your choice, your baby’s safety is the most important.

7. Diaper rash cream, and mild, preferably organic hypoallergenic baby
lotion/skin care.

Caring for New Mom

New babies sleep and wake up frequently. They don’t always sleep long enough to allow you to get some much needed rest. Some babies wake up every two hours, some can sleep longer.

Add to that the hormonal changes in your own body, and you have a formula that’s guaranteed to be stressful. Sometimes you will wonder when you can have full night’s sleep again. Here are a few tips to help a new mother relax and get at least a little more sleep :

Don’t try to be a supermom. When the baby has a nap, you should take a small nap yourself. The laundry and dishes can wait. You don’t need to have a perfect house. There will be time for house chores ; give yourself a break whenever you get the opportunity. Your top priorities should be taking care of your baby and yourself!

Get the help. If you have a good friend or relative to help out, by all means take advantage of that for an afternoon. Grandma would probably jump at the chance to have the baby all to herself for a few hours!

Stay connected. Keep in touch with the other new parents you met at prenatal class or Mom’s club, and take advantage of the opportunity to compare notes on your babies’ sleeping, eating, and crying patterns.

Get out of the house. Nothing adds to stress levels more than being housebound day after day with a new baby. Take baby for a brisk walk or for a leisurely stroll down to the shops – it’s important to get the fresh air and exercise.

Don’t worry about spoiling your baby. Ignore any well-meaning relatives who warn you against this. A study at Johns Hopkins University during the early 1970s revealed that those babies whose cries were quickly responded to, cried less at the age of one than babies whose cries were not responded to promptly.

Don’t forget about your relationship. After a few weeks, you and your partner may like to spend some time together, just the two of you, therefore ask someone you feel confident and comfortable with to baby sit for a couple of hours while you go out to have a coffee or lunch

Set aside as much personal time as possible for rest and relaxation. After putting your baby to bed at night, take some time to decompress and relax so you have a better chance of falling asleep. Take a bath with calming essence oil such as lavender, and listen to calming and relaxing music.

Some mother may find it’s hard even without a baby to fall asleep straight away. That’s okay, it will be soon over once your baby gets used to the sleep routine. Check out our baby sleep guide for some advice. There’s certainly a lot for a new mother to get used to!
